Driving on the winding mountain roads in Klein Karoo you might wonder if and when you will ever get there, but once you arrive, the peace and quiet, friendly hosts and delicious homemade food shared on the long table with the hosts and other guests make the drive feel so worth it!
This is the place for lovely walks on the mountain trails, blissful dips in the nearby rock pools or simply relax and enjoy the stunning garden and serene mountain scenery.
The Retreat is a Victorian farmhouse, 20 km on a gravel road north east of Calitzdorp, set in 560 ha of the beautiful Groenfontein Valley, bordering on the 129 000 ha Swartberg Nature Reserve.
The house, filled with yellow-wood and mellow Oregon pine, has a lounge and dining room – each with its own ceramic fireplace to keep them cosy on chilly winter evenings – leading onto a wide verandah, overlooking the sweeping gardens and majestic Swartberg mountains.
